We are still working on this Google Slide:

This week we analysed our survey and interview results. In the end, we have 23 responses of the poll and 10 interviewees. To ensure the accuracy and credibility of the results, I also found a survey conducted by cosmetic industry(https://www.skininc.com/skinscience/ingredients/Survey-54-Percent-of-Women-Want-All-Natural-Products-321263321.html). It shows that increasing number of people are aware of ethical and ecological factors in cosmetics, but they still lack relevent knowledge, which matches our survey’s result.

Through research, we concluded three most valuable insights, and planned improve the situation or help customers by design intervention.

From the book, Universal Methods of Design, I found two evaluative methods that were really helpful, and tried to analyse results in these two ways——Content Inventory and Audit, Crowdsourcing. In the book’s example, many pictures were gathered. Therefore, it could also be used as an original version of mood board of the concept. But when I set out to conduct crowdsourcing, I found it really difficult to ask interviewees to provide useful and relevent pictures. Maybe I should narrow the scope of the question to help interviewees, rather than just by asking:”What’s your feeling or insights about cosmetic products’ ethical and ecological efforts?(It could be your favorite brand, a picture that describes your feeling, relevent website you always use, etc.)” My crowdsourcing research kind of failed, with few useful and valuable pictures gathered. However, I did get keywords during the process. So I categorized these frequently used keywords by interviewees to form a general picture of current customer’s awareness on cosmetics.

From content inventory and audit of EWG’s App, one pain point of uers was that there were too much text and terminology. So I came up with the idea to add some animation and charaterized ingredients to attract viewer’s and help them to understand these complicated words. During the interview, many indicated that they preferred to watch videos of Internet celebrity to exlpain cosmetics’ ingredients, because it could be more fun and understandable. To characterize and simplified ingredients’ functions and side-effect might do the same job.

This sketch used PEG and Behentrimonium methosulfate as examples. PEG in cosmetics could keep the skin moisture, but if used on broken skin, it might cause cancer. So the little cell I drew has tentacles of water drops with a horrible mouth which is going to bite the broken skin of the girl’s face. And Behentrimonium methosulfate is a little monster with smooth body and red foots which symbolizes allergy.

Anothe sketch shows how our plug-in would look like. Before installation, the user could choose whether the pop-up windows would appear automatically while browsing cosmetic products or after user click the icon of the plug-in.
